Kenya Hosts NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024: Innovators Use Space Technology to Tackle Global Challenges


As part of the activities commemorating World Space Week 2024, KSA supported the convening of the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024 at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KARLO) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya on 5-6 October 2024. The two-day hackathon event, brought together innovators, developers, and enthusiasts from diverse fields to solve global challenges using space technology.

The participants worked on solutions addressing environmental sustainability, climate monitoring, and data from satellite imagery. The collaboration with KSA provided mentorship and expertise, enhancing the teams' abilities to develop impactful solutions for Africa and beyond. The hackathon fostered creativity and technical skills, empowering participants to apply space data in real-world scenarios.

The event targets underscoring Kenya's growing role in the global space community and the importance of local talent in contributing to space innovations that can address pressing challenges, from agriculture to climate change. The culmination of the hackathon was the awarding of the top 3 winners. The event was coordinated by Dash Insights and supported by IBM,Uraia, Leo Sky Africa, HTS, RIIS, PCI Engineering, ESRI Eastern Africa, and Power Learn Project.
